Introduction
Instructors can import their course rosters from their school's Blackboard Learn LMS into Poll Everywhere. This automatically registers each student as a Poll Everywhere participant. Registering students with Poll Everywhere allows educators to easily identify how students responded to their activities and export Poll Everywhere gradebook reports as grade columns within Blackboard.
This guide covers both the Ultra Course View and the Original Course View. Tool registration is identical for both; the differences appear when you create placements and verify the integration, and each of those sections calls out what differs.
Pre-requisites
- A Blackboard Learn instance with administrator access
- A Poll Everywhere 2.0 account with valid permissions and Courses enabled
Note: Blackboard has announced that the Original Course View is supported only through December 31, 2026. On January 1, 2027, Original courses become read-only. The integration works in Original courses until then, but new course setups should prefer the Ultra Course View.
Register the Tool
Step 1: In your Poll Everywhere 2.0 account, navigate to https://pe.app/a/settings/lti_configurations?provider=blackboard and select the Blackboard provider. Keep this page open — you will copy the Client ID from it in Step 4 and return to it in Step 7.
Step 2: In Blackboard Learn as an Administrator, navigate to Admin → Integrations → LTI Tool Providers.
Step 3: Click Register LTI 1.3/Advantage Tool.
Step 4: Enter the Client ID shown on the Poll Everywhere LTI configuration page and click Submit.
Step 5: Review the pre-filled tool configuration. Under Tool Status, mark the tool as Approved to enable it.
Step 6: Under Institution Policies, keep User Fields to Send (Role, Name, Email), Allow grade service access, and Allow Membership Service Access set to Yes, then click Submit. Membership service access is required for course roster sync; grade service access is required for gradebook export.
Step 7: Back on the Poll Everywhere LTI configuration page, click Complete Blackboard Setup. The registration form will be pre-filled with the Blackboard connection details. Optionally add a label (e.g., "Blackboard - My University") and click Create Registration.
The new registration appears in the Registrations list on the same page.
Create Placements
Placements control where Poll Everywhere 2.0 appears inside Blackboard for instructors and students. Create two placements:
- A Deep Linking placement, which lets instructors add specific Poll Everywhere activities to their course content. This is the placement used in both the Ultra and the Original Course View.
- A Course tool placement, which adds Poll Everywhere 2.0 to the "Books & Course Tools" list of every Ultra course so instructors can launch and manage their Poll Everywhere course. Course tool placements appear only in the Ultra Course View — Original courses do not list LTI 1.3 course tools under Tools.
Step 1: On the LTI Tool Providers page, open the options menu next to Poll Everywhere 2.0 and select Manage Placements.
Step 2: Click Create Placement.
Deep Linking Placement
Step 3: Fill in the following fields and click Submit:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Label | Poll Everywhere 2.0 Deep Linking |
| Handle | poll-everywhere-2-deep-linking (must be unique, lowercase, no spaces) |
| Availability | Yes |
| Type | Deep Linking content tool |
| Target Link URI | https://pe.app/a/lti/launch |
Course Tool Placement (Ultra Course View)
Step 4: From the same Manage Placements page, click Create Placement again. Fill in the following fields and click Submit:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Label | Poll Everywhere 2.0 |
| Handle | poll-everywhere-2-course-tool (must be unique, lowercase, no spaces) |
| Availability | Yes |
| Type | Course tool |
| Target Link URI | https://pe.app/a/lti/launch |
Verify the Integration
Ultra Course View
Step 1: Navigate to an Ultra course as an instructor.
Step 2: Under Details & Actions, open Books & Tools → View course & institution tools and locate Poll Everywhere 2.0 in the list. Click it to launch.
Alternatively, add Poll Everywhere 2.0 via: Course Content → + → Content Market → select the Poll Everywhere 2.0 deep-linking tile.
Step 3: If this is the first launch, you will be prompted to log in to Poll Everywhere and link your course.
Step 4: Verify that the course roster syncs and that you can create and present activities.
Original Course View
Step 1: Navigate to an Original course as an instructor and open a content area (for example, Content).
Step 2: With Edit Mode ON, open Build Content and locate the Poll Everywhere 2.0 Deep Linking menu item. Click it, select an activity, and confirm it appears as a content item that launches Poll Everywhere.
Note: Poll Everywhere will not appear on the Original course Tools page — the Course tool placement is Ultra-only. This is expected.
Troubleshooting
- "No Registration for LTI token" error: Ensure you completed the "Complete Blackboard Setup" step in Poll Everywhere to create the registration record.
- Tool not appearing in Content Market or Books & Tools (Ultra): Verify that a placement has been created and that its availability is set to "Yes".
- Tool not appearing under Tools in an Original course: This is expected — LTI 1.3 course tool placements only appear in the Ultra Course View. Original course instructors add Poll Everywhere through a content area's Build Content menu using the Deep Linking placement.
-
Launch opens a blank page: Check that the Target Link URI in the placement matches:
https://pe.app/a/lti/launch - Roster not syncing: Verify Allow Membership Service Access is set to Yes on the tool's Institution Policies.
