Learning Tools Interoperability 1.3, or LTI Advantage, is the newest standard defined by the IMS Global Learning Consortium for communicating student data between systems. This latest standard creates a consistent, secure, and agile framework that can be used across different LMS tools. Poll Everywhere is encouraging all of our LMS integration users to update to the new LTI Advantage tools before 2021, as they provide the latest practices for protecting student data and personal identifiable information.
In the following sections, you will find the Canvas LMS LTI Adv. 1.3 - Getting Started for Instructors, version 2.0.3.
Before you begin
To use the Poll Everywhere LTI Advantage Canvas integration, it is recommended to first publish the course and add a start and end date for the course term. This guide also assumes that your IT administrator has already integrated Poll Everywhere as an App into Canvas through either modules or course navigation. Please confirm with your institution's documentation which integration path is supported.
1: Ensure the course is published using the button at the top right of the Course home screen.
2. Next, go to the course Settings and on the Course Details tab, make sure the course has a start date in the past, and an end date that is in the future from when you intend to use the integration.
Step 1: First-Time Use
The first time you launch Poll Everywhere in Canvas, you may be prompted to approve permissions. After granting access and selecting the correct course, your Poll Everywhere course dashboard will appear, displaying Polls, Responses, Attendance, Assignments, and Roster.
Note: Roster is automatically synced from Canvas. If multiple instructors launch Poll Everywhere, each will be recognized as an instructor in the system.
Step 2: Viewing Course Data in Poll Everywhere
Open the Poll Everywhere app from within Canvas (Please note that this should be launched from within a Canvas Course).
-
The home page shows:
Number of students synced
Assignments requiring syncing
Current grading configurations
Step 3: Grading Configurations
You can create or customize grading rules. Examples include:
Participation-based: e.g., answered ≥80% of questions = full credit.
Correctness-based: points awarded based on correct answers.
Attendance-based: credit given only when attendance is verified.
Note: You can combine these grading approaches for more flexibility.
Step 4: Polls & Sharing
Click the Create Polls button to launch the full Poll Everywhere workspace. Any polls you create there can be reused across multiple courses. Use folders to stay organized by course, topic, week, or teaching module. You can create folders for “Week 1: Intro to Ethics” or “Midterm Review” for easy tracking.
Sharing: Polls can be manually shared or are automatically shared when linked to an assignment. From your Polls list, you can share individual polls or entire folders:
Click the Share dropdown next to the item.
Select the LMS course or system team.
Confirm that instructors will have access.
Note: Poll Everywhere 2.0 introduces automatic course team sharing when launched from your LMS. Each LMS course now creates a background system team, allowing all content shared with that course to be automatically accessible by instructors and teaching staff.
Step 4: Responses and Assignments
-
Responses Tab: Displays questions students answered week by week.
A question will appear if ≥20% of the roster responded.
You can generate assignments from these responses.
Step 5: Attendance Tab
This will automatically list attendance questions and results.
Instructors can manually verify attendance if automatic verification fails.
On the Attendance page, you’ll see students flagged as “not verified.”
Click on a student’s name (e.g., Elizabeth Brown) to review their submission reason and approve/reject attendance.
Once approved, their participation score updates automatically.
Step 6. Creating Assignments
You can build assignments in two ways:
Option A: Create a New Assignment
Select responses from your poll list.
Click Create New Assignment.
Enter a title (default suggested by date).
Choose or configure grading rules.
Save and open the assignment.
Option B: Add to an Existing Assignment
Select responses.
Choose an existing assignment.
Add the selected questions.
Assignments can be generated from polls, responses, or attendance data.
Step 7: Grading & Syncing Back to Canvas
Once assignments are created and graded in Poll Everywhere, click Sync Grades.
-
Sync status can be checked:
On the Assignments page
Or on the Home page
Grades appear in the Canvas Grades section as individual line items (e.g., Attendance, Participation, Correctness).
