Learning Tools Interoperability 1.3, or LTI Advantage, is the newest standard defined by the IMS Global Learning Consortium for communicating student data between systems. This latest standard creates a consistent, secure, and agile framework that can be used across different LMS tools. Poll Everywhere is encouraging all of our LMS integration users to update to the new LTI Advantage tools before 2021, as they provide the latest practices for protecting student data and personal identifiable information.
In the following sections, you will find the Canvas LMS LTI Adv. 1.3 - Getting Started for Instructors, version 2.0.3.
Before you begin
In order to use the Poll Everywhere LTI Advantage Canvas integration, it is recommended to first publish the course and add a start and end date for the course term. This guide also assumes that your IT administrator has already integrated Poll Everywhere as an App into Canvas through either modules or course navigation. Please confirm with your institution's documentation which integration path is supported.
Step 1: Ensure the course is Published using the button at the top right of the Course home screen.
Step 2: Next, go to the course Settings and on the Course Details tab make sure the course has a start date in the past, and an end date that is in the future from when you intend to use the integration.
Option A: Connecting your course to Poll Everywhere using modules
This is the stable method for connecting your course to Poll Everywhere, but requires that your IT administrator has set poll everywhere to integrate through modules, and not course navigation (See Option B)
Step 1: Go to the course that you wish to connect with Poll Everywhere and click the ‘+ Module’ button. Name the module whatever you like in the subsequent popup window, then click the ‘Add Module’ button to save
Step 2: Within your new module, click the ‘+’ button. From the dropdown menu at the top of the popup window, select ‘External Tool’, then select Poll Everywhere. URL and Page Name fields will auto-populate below. Lastly, check the ‘Load in a new tab’ checkbox to and click ‘Add Item’ to save.
Step 3: Now, click on the new Poll Everywhere link that you made within the module. You will see a ‘Load Poll Everywhere in a new window’ button. Click this button to launch the Poll Everywhere connection.
Step 4: In the new tab, you will be asked to acknowledge you are launching Poll Everywhere through Canvas. Acknowledge the launch. On the next page, you will see a button to Sync Roster to import the students from your course into Poll Everywhere.
Step 5: After you click this button, a page will inform you that the participant import is proceeding, and you will see a ‘Go to Participants page’ button. Click the button. Once on the participants page, you will be able to verify that the import took place because there will be a new group named after your course.
Step 6: Now that you have connected your course to Poll Everywhere, you can delete the module you used to make the connection. Optionally, you can use the link in this module to perform future LTI actions.
Option B: Connecting your course to Poll Everywhere using Course Navigation
If your admin has configured the Poll Everywhere integration to include course navigation, the following steps can be done instead of module flow (Option B)
Step 1: Click on the “Poll Everywhere” option in the Course Navigation menu. Then click on “Continue to polleverywhere.instructure.com.” This button will open a new tab to the Poll Everywhere LTI page for this course.
Step 2: In the new tab, you may be asked to acknowledge you are launching Poll Everywhere through Canvas. Acknowledge the launch. On the next page, you will see a button to Sync Roster to import the students from your course into Poll Everywhere.
Step 3: After you click this button, a page will inform you that the participant import is proceeding and you will see a “Go to Participants page” button. Click the button. Once on the participants page, you will be able to verify that the import took place because there will be a new group named after your course.
Troubleshooting
Step 1: If a presenter is not logged into Poll Everywhere, they will be directed to do so via an error message:
Step 2: If a presenter is logged in using the wrong email address, they will see an error message indicating they need to log in with the email address associated with the university enterprise account. In this case, the button will direct the presenter to the login screen to log in with the correct credentials.
Step 3: If a user is logged in as a participant, they will see a message encouraging them to participate in a poll. This button will link the participant to the pollev.com response page, so they can enter their presenterʼs username and participate:
Step 4: If a user is attempting to use setup a poll everywhere connection with a course where they have the student role, they will get an access error message

Re-syncing your roster
After the initial connection, you may want to re-sync your participant roster. This may be necessary if students were added or dropped from the LMS course. Re-syncing the roster will create Poll Everywhere participant profiles for new students and add them to your Poll Everywhere participant group, while also removing any students that dropped the course.
When Auto Roster Sync is enabled, your course roster will automatically sync on a nightly basis. You can also sync the roster immediately through your Poll Everywhere Participants page.
Sync Rosters from the Courses page
Step 1: Navigate to your Participants page and select Courses.
Step 2: From the LMS courses screen, you will see all of the courses you have connected with the Poll Everywhere LTI Advantage integration. From here, you can click Sync Roster next to the specific course.
Note: To sync course rosters, Enable Roster Sync must be On. You can click the toggle button to turn on/off. When On, your rosters will automatically sync on a nightly-basis.
Step 3: To sync all of your courses, select Sync Rosters.
Note: Only courses that have Enable Roster Sync on will update.
Sync All Course Rosters from the Participants page
You can sync all of your course rosters by clicking Sync All Rosters. Courses that have enabled roster sync will be updated.
Exporting a Gradebook report
Step 1: Go to the Participants page, then select Courses.
Step 2: Select the name of the course you’d like to create a Gradebook report with.
Step 3: From this page you can create a new Gradebook report, or choose a Gradebook that you have already created for this LMS course.
Note: You cannot edit the activities within a Gradebook report, but choosing a previously created report will allow you to update and re-export the results.
Step 4: Adding a new Gradebook will put you into the report creation flow. In the side panel, select the Gradebook report and then the activities you wish to include in your report.
Step 5: Review the Gradebook report, and click the Export button at the bottom right when you are ready to export the grades to Canvas.
Note: The name of your report will be the name assumed by the grade column in Canvas. You can rename your report by clicking on the ‘Rename’ link next to the title at the top of the report.
Step 6: When you click the export button, you will see a popup that will either ask you to confirm the LMS course, or select the course to export the report to from a dropdown menu. Additionally, you will have the option to export the report as Grades or Participation. Make your selections, then click Next.
Step 7: The following pop-up will now filter the report by the participants in your LMS Course and start the export. You should then see a message indicating that the export has completed and is processing in the background.
Step 8: Once the export is complete, head back over to Canvas and click into your Grade center to verify that the new Gradebook column was created.
Please note: If you change the name of the gradebook report in Poll Everywhere and
re-export, it will update the name of the assignment in Canvas. Additionally, if you
change the assignment name or grades in Canvas, it will revert back to the name and
grades in Poll Everywhere when you re-export the report to Canvas. For this reason, we
recommend not making changes to the Canvas gradebook aer you export a gradebook
report from Poll Everywhere.
